What we check

We look at the tank and connections, the gas supply or electrical feed, thermostat and heating elements or burner assembly, the anode, the temperature and pressure relief valve, expansion control, and the venting. Some symptoms that look like a failing heater are actually supply pressure, a mixing valve, or a fixture-side problem — we confirm which before recommending replacement.

Repair or replace

A thermostat, element, gas control or relief valve is usually worth repairing. A tank that is leaking from the vessel itself is not repairable — that is a replacement. Where the unit is serviceable but near end of life we tell you that plainly so you can plan rather than react.
